MCR, the county’s high school SGA, has been hard at work so far during the 2017-18 school year. Determined to set in-stone a bright future for the students of this county, the officers and the executive board have worked to spread the word about MCR’s work across social media and advocate for students at various events. MCR hosted a fundraiser at Chipotle in October and already has held three General Assemblies (GA). One of the overarching themes of the year has been mental health reform. MCR has worked to address mental health issues with President Michael Yin and the rest of the officers discussing the issues in-depth at the GAs. At the General Assembly at Magruder, attendants participated in breakout sharing group activities. In these groups, they discussed plans to help address mental health problems. Some of the ideas listed were, school unity days and a stronger focus on mental health in health education classes. A similar event was conducted at the Executive Board meeting on November 9th. The Executive Board split up into groups to discuss the issue and what can be done to improve current conditions. The members of MCR have also voiced input on the 2018-19 school year calendar; this has also been discussed in-depth by members of the SMOB Advisory Council. At the Magruder GA, SMOB Matt Post discussed the changes to the school calendar for next year.
MCR has started off the new school year on a bright note. Despite the many challenges the officers and executive board members faced and the obstacles encountered by the many student leaders who work hard advocating for their peers, MCR has pushed through to deliver a strong fundraiser and three general assemblies. MCR hopes to continue pushing forward to bring a positive change to the county that will impact not only this year’s student body, but the student body across MCPS for years to come. As stated by Nate Tinbite, the MCR Treasurer, “We tend to unite around our common values to advocate on important issues before us.” MCR has united to combat mental health challenges and other hurdles to our education. They will continue to fight for the student body for the rest of this school year.
