MCR & MCJC Joint GA

Every year, there is a joint General Assembly (GA) with MCR and MCJC. To start the GA, Officers from MASC (State-wide SGA) spoke to us about community partnerships and upcoming events.

The Charity MASC is working with currently is FINISH Sarcoma. MCR and MCJC are responsible for collecting colored pencils, markers, and pens. MCR will be collecting donations at the March General Assembly at Clarksburg HS. MCJC will be collecting donations at the March General Assembly at Roberto Clemente MS.

This year, MASC is also partnering with Sugar-Free Kids, Strong Schools MD, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Maryland Leadership Workshops (MLW).

Officer Report Highlights:

  • MCJC Secretary - Maintaining the MCJC Minutes

  • MCR Secretary - Maintaining minutes of all meetings and working to maintain close relationship with MCJC, MSP, and MCCPTA

  • MCJC Treasurer - Ice Skating Fundraiser - Rockville Outdoor Rink, January 25, 4-6 PM

  • MCR Treasurer - On Cell Phones During Lunch (PDL) Task Force, MSP (Minority Scholars) Task Force & CUAH (Communities United Against Hate) & MCC-PTA (County PTA), working on Youth Engagement and Leadership Project

  • MCJC Vice President - Working on Website, should be up by the end of the month

  • MCR Vice President - Mentoring MCJC, co-president of EmpowHER, first meeting January 18, from 6-8 PM at Shady Grove Middle

  • MCJC President - Working with Public Relations on school visits and Environmental Affairs video contest

  • MCR President - Is an MCCPTA (County PTA) Liaison, CUAH (Communities United Against Hate), Strong Schools MD, working on Student Leadership Newsletter, attended minority Scholars Program Task Force, and working on Mental Health with Dr. Smith and Board of Ed.

Next, there were breakout groups. We discussed Mental Health and the Achievement Gap. MCR’s PR and SEC department gave brief reports. Ananya, the MCR VP introduced EmpowHER, which is an organization that is advocating for women's rights and domination in male-dominated areas.

  • Student Forum on Mental Health - January 8th from 6-8 PM at Carver Educational Services Center (850 Hungerford Dr)

  • MCR Executive Board Meeting - January 9th at Carver Educational Services Center from 6-8 PM

  • MCR General Assembly - January 10th at Wootton High School

  • MCJC Executive Board Meeting will be on January 10th at Carver Educational Services Center from 6-8 PM

  • MCJC General Assembly - January 11th at Kingsview Middle School

  • Board's Operating Budget Hearings - Tuesday, January 16th at 6:30 PM, at the Carver Educational Services Center.

  • EmpowHER - January 18th from 6-8 PM at Shady Grove Middle School

  • MLK Week of Service will be held the week of January 15-19

  • SMOB Filing closes on January 26, 2018

  • SMOB Nominating Convention will be on February 21, at Watkins Mill High

  • MASC Legislative Session - Saturday, February 2

  • MASC Advocacy Week - March 5th - 9th

  • MASC Convention - Wednesday, April 11- Friday April 13
